It used to be possible to left swipe to background this app so I could start another app, eg a calculator

I don't understand your question – swipe to background the app? this sounds like an OS feature, not something we have any control over. I don't know of anything that has changed which would affect the ability to open other apps, as that's a basic feature of the phone OS. Could you clarify, please? Also if this is a bug then https://help.hamstudy.org would be the better path, file a ticket.
